And just like that, our Pumpkin Harlequin Mystery Class is complete! Three lessons, lots of stitches, a little sparkle, and one seriously adorable pumpkin. I couldn’t be happier with how he turned out.

Lesson Three was all about finishing the details that bring this little guy and his friend to life.

First up, the stars. And what stitch did I choose for the stars? Star Stitch, of course! Profound, I know. Remember learning how to draw a star in kindergarten? That’s pretty much what we’re doing here, only with thread. It’s super easy, wonderfully forgiving, and can be adapted to almost any size or shape of star painted on your canvas. Just scale your thread appropriately and you’re good to go. I may need to write a Techniques post about this one someday.

And then there’s the birdie!

In my mind, he’s a little stuffed, quilted bird who has somehow come to life and landed on our pumpkin’s curly stem. That was the inspiration behind my stitch and thread choices. I wanted his different sections to look like little swatches of printed fabric, all pieced together into one very charming bird.

He has a tiny button for an eye and Swarovski crystals on his butt. Because why not? Every bird deserves a little bling.

We finished things off with the outlines on the bird and the pumpkin’s stem, bringing all those wonderful shapes and details together.

And there he is! Our happy little pumpkin, his fabulous ruffle, a sparkling sky full of stars, and one very fancy birdie. Stinkin’ freakin’ cute!

Now, for those inquiring minds who want to know what I’m going to do with him, I still haven’t decided. Frame him? Make him into a stand-up? Either way, he’s going to be adorable. Decisions, decisions.
