Sometimes I really do leave the Beehive!
After Friendsgiving weekend, our friend Kathy stayed an extra day, so Karl and I bundled up for a little Baltimore adventure — the famous Miracle on 34th Street.

For those who don’t know, this isn’t the movie — it’s a real neighborhood tradition that started all the way back in 1947 when Darlene Hosier’s father bought a house on 34th Street and started stringing Christmas lights. Years later, Darlene and her husband Bob Hosier carried it forward, and in 1991, Bob hung lights across the street to connect their house with a neighbor’s. That one string of lights sparked a full-block tradition that’s been glowing ever since. Now, every home joins in, transforming the street into a sea of color and sparkle from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.

It’s joyful, quirky, and pure Baltimore — equal parts magic and “what on earth possessed you to plug that many extension cords into one outlet? followed by where do they store all this stuff?”

This year was a quiet night — not quite the usual crowds — but we still wandered, iphone in hand. Kathy and I posed for a few shots, and Karl and I grabbed a rare photo together (proof that we both exist to each other’s friends).

The standout this year? The pink flamingo house. Hundreds of flamingos marching across the yard, glowing in all their plastic glory. Flamingos are such a Baltimore thing — a nod to John Waters and his delightfully oddball world. His movie Pink Flamingos might not be my vibe, but the idea of a yard full of cheerful, candy-colored birds? Now that makes me smile.

And who knows… maybe that bright pop of pink will make another appearance somewhere down the road.
For now, enjoy a little sparkle from my hometown and a peek into one of Baltimore’s quirkiest, happiest traditions. Happy Holidays, Hon!
