You may know that I enjoy counting and compensating stitches more than the average person. If you limit yourself to no counting or compensation, you limit yourself to Tent Stitch only. We know that’s not working for me. So, what can I tell you that’s going to make this easier for you.
I wrote a blog post a few years ago on the basics of compensation. You can read it here.
Let’s take it a step further. What if I said, stitch this dog in the Squares and Eyelets stitch, and no you can’t stitch over the flowers and leaves even though odds are good they will be dimensional.
Wow, that’s a lot of pattern counting. Here’s what you are going to do. Count the threads between the eyelets. There are six. Pick a spot on the dog and using your laying tool, gently enlarge a hole. Eyelets are always prettiest if you enlarge the hole enough that it stays open after stitching. Go for it! Don’t make a giant hole but an enlarged hole. Now, start counting and poking holes. This goes fast. Six threads in every direction, poke a hole. Here’s what you get.
Now all the counting is done for you. Just connect the dots. All stitches are two canvas threads long. Your “holes” are the centers of the eyelets. Stitch all stitches so that they share that common enlarged center hole. Stitch a box and you are on your way to the next “hole.” Before you know it, the dog is stitched in the fun pattern with no pesky counting while you are stitching.
You can do this with any stitch. Consider your canvas and your stitch. If you are doing an Eyelet Stitch your holes can be larger. If you are doing a different type of stitch, enlarge your holes just enough to see them. Think about a big Jessica, mark your edges and away you go.
