Sunday was the second lesson of Chinchillin by Heather Gauthier and it’s all about the background. You knew that was coming, right? Heather’s work is grounded in reality but at the same time there’s a good bit of fantasy. Is our chinchilla floating in a coconut shell down a lazy river? But then wait, what are the shapes floating in the sky? I decided it is fancy wallpaper which then means he is floating on a table. Oh well, either way he is a cutie pie and filled with stitches that mimic my vision.
The water he is floating in is stitched in two different overdyed metallics. The colors shimmer and dance between the two. The stitch is worked in two passes. It’s a bit of a brain tease but totally worth the effort.

In my mind the background is wallpaper which is great because we can do pretty much any stitch we want as long as the thread is the right weight. I chose one of my favorite stitches and stitched it using a single ply of Soie d’Alger. Less is more. It needs to recede!

The fun light aqua medallions also need to stay in the background but they can have a little bit more drama thanks to my Color Dreams Floche.

There’s more to be added to the background next time along with a lot of leaves and plants!

There are two more lessons, July 21 and August 11. If you would like to join us, here’s the link to signup for Chinchillin. We do have canvases in stock so your own cute little rodent can be on it’s way quickly. xo
Check out our sale section. I’ve marked down a bunch of canvases to make room for new. When they are gone, they are gone!
The newest of the new is in the What’s New section of the website. Stay up to date on new canvases by visiting that link often :-) You never know what might just have been released.
